Explorer Athletics
Located in 07067, NJ, our program for 1st and 2nd graders involves modified versions of traditional sports. Using scaled-down playing fields and courts equipped for their age group, this approach allows campers to build fundamental game skills while experiencing success. Our Athletic Specialists, who oversee these activities, are trained to allocate a portion of each session to teach a new skill, followed by gameplay that emphasizes the newly acquired skill. Oak Crest counselors actively engage in these activities alongside the campers, working closely with specialists to create and reinforce opportunities for success among our young participants.
Creative Arts
In 07067, NJ, your child will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of artistic activities, which are held in air-conditioned classrooms and led by experienced art instructors. Each week, campers can attend sessions in various disciplines, including Ceramics, Music, Mad Science, Cooking, Drama, Nature, Dance, Digital Photography, Jewelry Making, Computers, and more.
Additionally, all Explorer Girl groups are involved in a Dance routine as part of our annual Showcrest event, a significant Dance and Drama Production. Showcrest is a substantial production typically scheduled for the sixth week of camp, held in the evening at a local venue, and featuring professional sound and lighting.
Learn to Swim
At Oak Crest in 07067, NJ, our Learn-to-Swim Program is a foundational element of the Oak Crest experience. Our aquatic facility is exceptionally well-equipped, boasting a state-of-the-art 12,000 square foot Aquatic Complex specifically tailored to accommodate children aged 3-8. The Aquatic Complex offers a range of water depths, from 1 to 6 feet, allowing us to begin instruction in shallower water and progress to deeper levels as our young swimmers advance in their skills.
Every morning, our Explorers partake in a 40-minute swim lesson led by certified swim instructors, with group counselors providing support. In the afternoon, the groups return for free swim sessions. Our approach to swim lessons is skill-based rather than age-based, ensuring that we can appropriately challenge swimmers at all proficiency levels. Our instructors undergo annual training, drawing from not only the American Red Cross guidelines but also over 25 years of practical experience in teaching children to swim.
Learn to Ride a Bicycle
Mastering the skill of riding a bicycle is a significant milestone in childhood development. Located in 07067, NJ, Oak Crest provides an ideal environment for this achievement through its newly established Bicycle Village. This village includes a 1/4-mile training course, a state-of-the-art pump track, and a mountain bike preparation trail. Cycling not only promotes independence in children but also imparts essential lessons in balance, posture control, coordination, and the development of motor skills. Our experienced instructors offer individualized attention, helping novice riders build the confidence needed to succeed. Oak Crest ensures that appropriately sized bikes and helmets are provided for the learning process.
Ropes Course and Low Ropes Course
In 07067, NJ, Oak Crest has established a low ropes course with a dual purpose: to enhance the gross motor skills of our 1st Grade Explorers and to equip them with the necessary skills for navigating our Climbing Tower. Our 1st Grade Explorers engage in activities on the Low Ropes Course, which involve climbing, exploration, and swinging, all taking place just inches above the ground. When these campers progress to the 2nd Grade, they have the opportunity to experience the Climbing Tower and Zipline for the first time. The Ropes Course is designed to allow campers to advance at their own pace. As they become more comfortable and confident, they gain access to higher and more challenging elements.
Prior to each season, our ropes courses undergo thorough safety inspections and receive certification from the company responsible for their construction. Additionally, certified ropes instructors, who also lead the groups through all ropes courses, conduct daily safety checks to ensure the well-being of our campers.
Social Development
In the Explorer Division at Oak Crest in 07067, NJ, there is a deliberate emphasis on nurturing collaborative skills within a group context. Throughout the day, campers are encouraged to collaborate and provide mutual support to one another. The group dynamic, combined with the active engagement of counselors, plays a pivotal role in fostering strong bonds and friendships among the campers.
