At Oak Crest in 07939, NJ, our program is tailored to the developmental stages of our campers. The Explorer program, similar to the Munchkin program, is designed to enrich skills across various athletic and creative pursuits, improve swimming abilities, and promote social and emotional intelligence.
For first-grade campers, we introduce exciting elements like the Climbing Tower, Zipline, Giant Swing, and the cherished Oak Crest GAGA tradition. As campers progress to second grade, they have the opportunity to enjoy a CHOICE period in their schedule, enabling them to select activities each week and fostering a dynamic and engaging camp experience.
Explorer Athletics
Located in 07939, NJ, our Summer Camp offers a unique approach for 1st and 2nd graders, where they engage in modified versions of traditional sports. Using scaled-down fields and courts with age-appropriate equipment, this method allows campers to experience success while learning essential game skills.
Our dedicated Athletic Specialists are responsible for these activities, and they structure each session to include skill instruction followed by gameplay that emphasizes the newly learned skill. Oak Crest counselors actively join in these activities alongside the campers, working in collaboration with specialists to create and reinforce opportunities for success for our young participants.
Creative Arts
Located in 07939, NJ, our Summer Camp offers a rich array of artistic experiences for your child. These creative activities are conducted in air-conditioned classrooms by experienced art teachers. Each week, campers participate in sessions covering a wide range of disciplines, including Ceramics, Music, Mad Science, Cooking, Drama, Nature, Dance, Digital Photography, Jewelry Making, Computers, and more.
Furthermore, all Explorer Girl groups have the opportunity to be part of a Dance routine as a significant component of our annual Showcrest event, which is a prominent Dance and Drama Production. Showcrest is a substantial production typically held during the sixth week of camp, taking place in the evening at a local venue, complete with professional sound and lighting.
Learn to Swim
At Oak Crest in 07939, NJ, our Learn-to-Swim Program is a foundational aspect of our camp experience. Our aquatic facility is exceptional, featuring a state-of-the-art 12,000 square foot Aquatic Complex designed specifically for children aged 3-8. This facility offers a range of water depths, from 1 to 6 feet, allowing us to begin instruction in shallow water and progress to deeper levels as our young swimmers develop their skills.
Every morning, our Explorer campers engage in a 40-minute swim lesson led by certified swim instructors, with group counselors providing support. In the afternoon, campers return for free swim sessions. Our swim lessons are skill-based rather than age-based, ensuring that we can challenge swimmers at all proficiency levels. Our instructors undergo annual training, and our teaching methods draw from the expertise of the American Red Cross as well as over 25 years of practical experience in instructing children in swimming.
Learn to Ride a Bicycle
At Oak Crest, situated in 07939, NJ, we understand that learning to ride a bicycle is a significant childhood milestone. To facilitate this journey, we’ve established the Bicycle Village, providing an ideal environment for this endeavor. This village includes a 1/4-mile training course, a state-of-the-art pump track, and a mountain bike preparation trail.
Cycling not only promotes independence in children but also imparts valuable lessons in balance, posture control, coordination, and the development of motor skills. Our experienced instructors offer personalized attention, helping novice bikers build the confidence they need. At Oak Crest, we ensure that appropriately sized bikes and helmets are provided to facilitate the learning process.
Ropes Course and Low Ropes Course
Located in 07939, NJ, Oak Crest has developed a low ropes course with a dual purpose: to enhance the gross motor skills of our 1st Grade Explorers and prepare them for the Climbing Tower experience. First-grade Explorers participate in activities on the Low Ropes Course, which include climbing, exploration, and swinging, all conducted at a safe height just inches above the ground. Upon advancing to 2nd Grade, Oak Crest campers get the opportunity to experience the Climbing Tower and Zipline for the first time. The Ropes Course is designed to allow campers to progress at their own pace, gaining confidence and access to higher and more advanced elements over time.
Before each season, our ropes courses undergo thorough safety inspections and certification by the company that constructed them. Furthermore, certified ropes instructors, who also lead the groups through all ropes courses, conduct daily safety checks to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for our campers.
Social Development
Within the Explorer Division at Oak Crest in 07939, NJ, there is a strong emphasis on cultivating collaborative skills within a group dynamic. Throughout the day, campers are encouraged to work together, fostering mutual support and teamwork. This group-oriented structure, along with the active involvement of counselors, plays a pivotal role in nurturing strong bonds and lasting friendships among campers.
