For first-grade campers, the experience includes an introduction to exciting activities such as the Climbing Tower, Zipline, Giant Swing, and participation in the Oak Crest tradition of GAGA. As campers progress into the second grade, they have the opportunity to choose from a variety of activities during a designated CHOICE period in their weekly schedule, creating a dynamic and engaging camp experience.
Explorer Athletics
Located in 08903, New Jersey, our summer program for 1st and 2nd graders involves the participation in adapted versions of traditional sports. We utilize scaled-down fields and courts, along with age-appropriate equipment, to ensure that campers can experience success while developing fundamental game skills.
Our dedicated Athletic Specialists, who supervise these activities, are trained to allocate a portion of each session for instructing a new skill, followed by gameplay that emphasizes the application of that skill. In addition to the specialists, Oak Crest counselors actively engage in these activities alongside the campers, working collaboratively to create and reinforce opportunities for success among our young participants.
Creative Arts

Each week, campers participate in sessions spanning various disciplines, including Ceramics, Music, Mad Science, Cooking, Drama, Nature, Dance, Digital Photography, Jewelry Making, Computers, and more.
Furthermore, all Explorer Girl groups are involved in a dance routine as part of our annual Showcrest, a significant Dance and Drama Production. Showcrest is a substantial production typically held during the sixth week of camp in the evening at a local venue, complete with professional sound and lighting to showcase the talents of our campers.
Learn to Swim
At Oak Crest, located in 08903, New Jersey, our Learn-to-Swim Program is an integral part of the Oak Crest experience. We take great pride in our exceptional aquatic facility, which includes a state-of-the-art 12,000 square foot Aquatic Complex designed specifically for children aged 3 to 8 years old. This Aquatic Complex features varying water depths from 1 to 6 feet, allowing us to begin swim instruction in shallow water and progress to deeper levels as our young swimmers advance in their skills.
Each morning, our Explorer campers participate in a 40-minute swim lesson led by certified swim instructors, with group counselors providing support and assistance. Our approach to swim lessons is skill-based rather than age-based, ensuring that we can challenge and support swimmers of all proficiency levels. Our instructors undergo annual training, and our swim techniques are informed by not only the American Red Cross but also over 25 years of practical experience in teaching children how to swim.
Learn to Ride a Bicycle
Learning to ride a bicycle is a pivotal childhood achievement, and Oak Crest, situated in 08903, New Jersey, provides an ideal environment for this endeavor through its recently established Bicycle Village. This dedicated facility boasts a 1/4-mile training course, a cutting-edge pump track, and a trail designed for mountain bike preparation.
The act of cycling not only encourages independence in children but also imparts valuable lessons in balance, posture control, coordination, and the development of essential motor skills. Our experienced instructors offer personalized guidance, enabling novice cyclists to build the confidence necessary for success. Oak Crest takes care of the provision of appropriately sized bicycles and helmets to facilitate the learning process.
Ropes Course and Low Ropes Course
In 08903, New Jersey, Oak Crest has established a low ropes course with a dual purpose: to enhance the gross motor skills of our 1st Grade Explorers and equip them with the necessary abilities to tackle our Climbing Tower. The 1st Grade Explorers engage in activities on the Low Ropes Course, which involve climbing, exploration, and swinging, all conducted at a low height, just inches above the ground.
Upon progressing to the 2nd Grade, Oak Crest campers have the opportunity to experience the Climbing Tower and Zipline for the first time. The Ropes Course is thoughtfully designed to allow campers to advance at their own pace. As they become more comfortable and confident, they gain access to higher and more challenging elements.
Prior to each season, our ropes courses undergo thorough safety inspections and certification by the company responsible for their construction. Additionally, our certified ropes instructors, who also lead the groups through all ropes courses, conduct daily safety checks to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for our campers.
Social Development
In Oak Crest, located in 08903, New Jersey, within the Explorer Division, there is a deliberate emphasis on nurturing collaborative skills within a group dynamic. Throughout the day, campers are encouraged to engage in collective efforts and build mutual support within their groups.
