Explorer Athletics

In Whitehouse Station, NJ, our summer program for 1st and 2nd graders involves tailored adaptations of traditional sports. We use scaled-down playing fields and courts equipped for their age group, ensuring that campers can experience success while acquiring essential game skills. Our Athletic Specialists, who supervise these activities, are well-trained to allocate a portion of each session to teach a new skill, followed by gameplay that emphasizes the recently learned skill. Furthermore, Oak Crest counselors actively engage in these activities alongside the campers, collaborating with specialists to create and reinforce opportunities for success among our young participants.

Learn to Swim

At Oak Crest in Whitehouse Station, NJ, our Learn-to-Swim Program is a cornerstone of the Oak Crest experience. Our aquatic facility sets the standard, boasting a state-of-the-art 12,000 square foot Aquatic Complex specifically designed for children aged 3 to 8 years old. This complex accommodates water depths ranging from 1 to 6 feet, allowing us to initiate instruction in standing-depth water and progress to deeper levels as our young swimmers develop their skills.

Each morning, our Explorer campers participate in a 40-minute swim lesson led by certified swim instructors, with additional support provided by group counselors. In the afternoons, campers return for free swim sessions. Importantly, our swim lessons are tailored to individual skill levels rather than being age-based, ensuring that we can challenge swimmers of all proficiencies. Our instructors receive annual training, and our swim techniques draw from not only the American Red Cross but also over 25 years of practical experience in teaching children to swim.

Ropes Course and Low Ropes Course

In Whitehouse Station, NJ, Oak Crest has developed a low ropes course with a dual purpose: to enhance the gross motor skills of our 1st Grade Explorers and equip them with the necessary skills to tackle our Climbing Tower. For 1st Grade Explorers, activities on the Low Ropes Course involve climbing, exploration, and swinging, all conducted just inches above the ground. Upon progressing to 2nd Grade, Oak Crest campers have the opportunity to experience the Climbing Tower and Zipline for the first time. The Ropes Course is thoughtfully designed to allow campers to advance at their own pace. As campers become more comfortable and confident, they gain access to higher and more challenging elements.

Prior to each season, our ropes courses undergo thorough safety inspections and certification by the company responsible for their construction. Additionally, certified ropes instructors, who also guide the groups through all ropes courses, conduct daily safety checks to ensure the well-being of our campers.
